Introduction

Pathology is the study of disease and plays an essential role in patient care.

Pathology services analyse blood, tissue and other samples to help healthcare professionals diagnose illness, monitor health, guide treatment and prevent disease.

We bring together health boards, trusts and national partners to support the improvement and transformation of pathology services, ensuring that they are sustainable and equipped for the future.

We provide national leadership and coordination to help partners address shared challenges and enable greater consistency in service planning and delivery across Wales.

Key areas of work

We help pathology services respond to changing demand and make the best use of their people, data and technology to deliver safe, reliable and timely diagnostic information for patients and healthcare professionals.

We work with services at regional and national levels, helping them with demand and capacity planning, data and benchmarking to identify opportunities for improvement and co-operation.

We are supporting the development and implementation of digital cellular pathology, which enables images of tissue samples to be viewed, shared and analysed digitally. This has the potential to improve access to specialist expertise and support more flexible and sustainable services.

Alongside this, we work with partners to strengthen quality and regulatory assurance and, through Pathology Academy Wales and national workforce programmes, we support education, training and professional development for the future workforce.
