After your baby is born

The weeks after having a baby can be exciting, emotional, and tiring in equal measure, and when you’re living with diabetes, there are a few extra things to keep in mind.

Your insulin needs may change very quickly after birth, especially if you have type 1 diabetes, so your healthcare team will help you adjust your doses.

If you have type 2 diabetes, your team may review whether you can return to tablets or continue insulin for a while.

Breastfeeding is encouraged for women with diabetes and is safe for you and your baby. It can sometimes cause your blood glucose levels to drop, so keeping snacks nearby and monitoring your levels more often can be helpful. If breastfeeding isn’t right for you, that’s okay too - your wellbeing matters, and support is available whichever feeding choice you make.

You’ll continue to have checks on your blood pressure, glucose levels, and any diabetes‑related complications.

If you had gestational diabetes, you’ll be offered a follow‑up glucose test to make sure your levels have returned to normal.

Remember, this is a period of adjustment. Be kind to yourself, and reach out if you need help - you’re not expected to navigate it all alone.
