Pregnancy and diabetes

Planning a pregnancy, managing diabetes when you are pregnant and after your baby is born

Pregnancy is an exciting time, and if you live with diabetes, it’s completely natural to have extra questions about how to keep yourself and your baby healthy.

If possible, it is ideal to plan your pregnancy, and your healthcare team can help with this. They will help you to have glucose levels that are in the target range, to take a higher dose of folic acid than is usual in pregnancy (this need to be prescribed rather than bought) and to stop any medications that may be harmful in pregnancy.

Not all pregnancies are planned and, in this case, let your healthcare team know as soon as possible if you are pregnant.

Throughout pregnancy you will have close support from the maternity and diabetes team to help you manage your blood glucose levels as these can change as pregnancy continues. This may mean changes in medication, food, activity and daily routine. This support will continue through delivery and after the baby is born.
