To improve patient care and meet the Welsh Government’s “More than Just Words” strategy, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) recognised a need to increase Welsh language proficiency among staff. Despite serving a region where 33% of the population (and over 60% in Gwynedd) speak Welsh, nearly half of BCUHB staff self-reported no Welsh skills. A strategic, sustainable training model was needed to close this gap.
BCUHB became the first health board to employ a full-time in-house Welsh language tutor and support officer. This team designed flexible, workplace-specific courses aligned with national curriculum standards but tailored to staff roles. Bespoke training was offered to priority groups (e.g. Speech and Language Therapy [SALT]), with a structured learning pathway for ‘Welsh to be learnt’ posts. The team collaborated closely with the National Centre for Learning Welsh to pilot sector-specific initiatives and engaged staff across all levels, including Board members.
The team will expand training to Mental Health and Learning Disability Services, continuing strategic collaboration with national partners to embed Welsh language skills across the health board.
