After your baby is born

The weeks after having a baby can be exciting, emotional, and tiring in equal measure, and if you’re living with diabetes, there are a few extra things to keep in mind.

Your insulin needs may change very quickly after birth, especially if you have type 1 diabetes, so your healthcare team will help you adjust your doses.

If you have type 2 diabetes, your team may review whether you can return to tablets or continue insulin for a while.

Breastfeeding is encouraged for women with diabetes and is safe for you and your baby. It can sometimes cause your blood glucose levels to drop, so keeping snacks nearby and monitoring your levels more often can be helpful. Insulin may need to be adjusted for breast-feeding.

Remember, this is a period of adjustment. Be kind to yourself and reach out if you need help.
