Looking after your feet

Looking after your feet is an important part of living well with diabetes.

Changes in sensation or circulation can develop slowly, so regular checks can help you spot anything early before it becomes a problem.

Your healthcare team will examine your feet at least once a year and talk you through what the results mean.

Day to day, getting into simple footcare habits can make a big difference. You are the most important person in preventing long term complications to your feet.

You are the best person to check your feet daily, looking out for any changes in the skin, cuts or grazes. If you can’t reach or see your feet, please ask someone to help you, like your family or carers.

Understanding how to protect your feet, choose suitable shoes, and recognise early signs—like redness, swelling, blisters, or breaks in the skin—can help keep them healthy.

If you ever notice something that doesn’t seem right, contacting your healthcare team promptly can help prevent complications.

With the right information and regular checks, many people feel confident managing their foot health and staying well.
