Nerve damage (neuropathy)

Neuropathy is a type of nerve damage that may happen with diabetes.

It most commonly affects the nerves in your feet and legs, but it can also affect your hands and other parts of the body.

Symptoms can vary from person to person, but many people notice tingling, numbness, burning, sharp pains, or a loss of sensation.

Sometimes, you may not feel small injuries to your feet, which is why regular checks are so important.

Some types of neuropathy may need different treatment for example Carpel Tunnel Syndrome where a nerve is trapped at the wrist. You may need a steroid injection or a minor operation. For some symptoms of neuropathy your diabetes team may suggest pain relief treatments or other medication, depending on your symptoms.

Daily foot checks, wearing suitable footwear, and getting any concerns looked at promptly can help protect your feet and keep you moving comfortably.
