Value Based Healthcare & Environmental Sustainability Workstream

The Value Based Healthcare (VBHC) & Environmental Sustainability workstream of the Value and Sustainability Board is established to drive meaningful change in healthcare delivery, focusing on both patient outcomes and long-term viability of healthcare systems.

The primary purpose of this workstream is to ensure that healthcare resources are used efficiently, delivering maximum value for patients while minimising waste and environmental impact.

By adopting VBHC principles, the workstream seeks to reorient healthcare practices to prioritise outcomes that matter most to patients, rather than simply measuring activity or volume of services. This involves developing frameworks and strategies that align clinical performance with holistic value, encompassing patient satisfaction, quality of care, and financial stewardship.

Alongside VBHC, the workstream champions sustainability across all aspects of healthcare provision. Its aim is to integrate environmental responsibility into decision-making, recognising the significant role that healthcare organisations play in reducing carbon footprint, managing resources responsibly, and promoting practices that support the health of both individuals and the planet.

Through collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement, the Value Based Healthcare (VBHC) & Environmental Sustainability workstream supports the Value and Sustainability Board in creating a future-ready healthcare system that is both patient-centred and environmentally sustainable. The workstream acts as a catalyst for embedding these values across policy, operations, and culture, ensuring that healthcare remains effective, equitable, and resilient for generations to come.
