Hive, the digital platform that measures improvement activity, has been updated with new features to make it more accessible, thanks to feedback from current users.
Designed by the Quality, Safety and Improvement directorate of the NHS Wales Performance and Improvement (previously known as Improvement Cymru), Hive has more than 400 live users, with numbers increasing week on week.
Priding themselves on continuously reviewing user feedback and making suggested changes where feasible, the team behind Hive has been regularly updating the platform since it first launched in October 2024.
The host of new changes includes the ability to upload mass project data using Excel, something that will make tracking project data more seamless for staff.
Dominque Bird, Acting National Director Quality, Safety & Improvement, said: “I’m so proud of the work that has been put into Hive. The team has worked hard on continuously developing the platform from when it was first suggested as a concept to now being used by more than 400 users and counting! Hive is free for NHS organisations so we’re keen that more staff use the platform to capture their project data, and we can learn and share from each other as we undertake similar improvement work across health boards and trusts.
“The biggest feedback we kept receiving from users was the need to upload project data in its volumes. The team has been working hard behind the scenes to make this happen so users can upload all their project data at once using Excel, a programme that staff traditionally use. We’re committed to actioning feedback promptly and encourage users to keep sharing platform suggestions with us.
“Our app is made for staff by staff so every change that’s made has the user in mind. For example, we’ve also introduced a search feature that lets users look up common terms so all projects and programmes tagged with those terms will be displayed, making it easier to find information in the system.”
In addition to the search feature and mass data upload features, Hive allows users to add in their innovation-related projects, and the drivers page has been updated with a more user-friendly interface.
To help staff navigate the platform and its updated features, a suite of user guides has been produced. There’s also a video tutorial of how to use Hive and its main features.
“We produced three visual guides for people to help use the platform. Our quick start guide covers the basics of the platform and acts as a great starting point for those first using Hive. Our detailed user guide goes into more depth in how to create and manage project data on the platform. We’ve also created a guide for organisation admins who have specific permissions to create and manage programmes on the platform.
“As we continue to add new features, we’ll keep modifying the guides to reflect the updated changes to the platform”, added Dom.
