NHS Wales Performance and Improvement has launched the first quality measures for the Quality Outcomes Framework (QOF).
The QOF is designed to track how well NHS services are doing in key areas like diabetes care, infection control, and patient experience. By bringing together information in one place, the QOF quality measures will help reduce variation across NHS Wales by making it easier for organisations to see what’s working well - and where things need to improve for patients.
Nicola Williams, Executive Director of Nursing, Allied Health Professionals and Health Science, Velindre University NHS Trust said:
“The development of the Wales Quality Outcomes Framework (QOF) is an important step in helping NHS Wales continue to improve the quality of care and outcomes for our population. The QOF will continue to mature and develop so that it provides a clear and consistent way to understand how services are performing across different areas, with a strong focus on keeping patients safe and improving their health outcomes”.
Dom Bird, Acting National Director, Quality, Safety and Improvement, added:
“We’re proud to launch the QOF today - a significant step forward in providing a consistent, high-level view of quality and safety across NHS Wales. The new Framework builds on our work to enable leaders in managing for quality by identifying, monitoring, and learning from key areas for improvement, ensuring better outcomes for patients and driving continuous progress.”
We have worked closely with multiple teams and organisations across NHS Wales and the Welsh Government to develop the QOF and will continue to do so in the development of the next phase.
The launch of the QOF quality measures shows a commitment to delivering safer, more equitable, and person-centred care across Wales, ensuring that quality improvement is embedded at every level of the NHS. This is in line with the “Duty of Quality” which means that every healthcare organisation has a legal responsibility to work to try and improve the standard of services.
